Students: time management is key!

Are you a morning person or an evening person? Do you prefer getting up at 6am or staying up late into the night? People say that getting up in the morning is better, but research shows that there can be distinct advantages to both which are not at first glance clear.

Let’s take the following as an example: you’re an engineering student and your dissertation concerning Exploring the role Red Diesel Norwich plays in the East Anglian economy is due soon. How soon? Next week...you really shouldn’t have gone to that party on the weekend...the hangover is killing you.

So here’s what you could do: you could either get up very early every day and work all day or you could stay up until 2 or 3am. Sure, you’ll struggle to get up the next morning but will that matter? Surely not.

many people function better in the evening. They are less tired, and seem to carry through the energy of the day into the evening’s work

Here are the advantages of getting up early and going to bed late (many are similar, but can be seen in a different light, no pun intended):

  1. Getting up early: this is great for the people it suits. In the morning there are no distractions and you won’t have people calling you up on the phone to ask if you want to go out for a coffee or lunch. By morning I mean from around 5am to 9am. There will also be a lack of emails coming in and you should be able to work for a solid couple of hours without any problems, which means you can focus all your efforts on that important writing work which you really should have done by now. Not only that but it’ll be dark out so you won’t feel compelled to go out in the sun. More importantly, getting up early enables you with more time later in the day to do other things.

  2. Staying up late: staying up late offers many of the advantages of getting up early; apart from the emails. Having not answered them that morning you’ll need to do them in the evening, or at least feel obliged to. This can be a major hassle and really interfere. That said, many people function better in the evening. They are less tired, and seem to carry through the energy of the day into the evening’s work. This makes things much more productive for them at this time, and so in reality both options are good for different people, depending on their circumstance.
