Share, but Insure

Finding affordable, decent student accommodation is the biggest nightmare a young person faces once they have secured a place at university. At one time universities nearly always offered their own purpose built accommodation at least to the new, first year students, if not to all students. Nowadays, however, you are lucky if your university even offers you a list of potential landlords, let alone hands you the key to a room.

Whatever form your accommodation takes, whether in a university block or in a private house, new students are going to have to learn one crucial lesson, to share!

You need to learn to share space, bathrooms and kitchens, toilet rolls and washing up liquid, even if the last probably doesn’t get used much. You need to learn to share confidences and secrets, as well as respecting personal space and privacy. You need to learn to share cupboards.

I went into one shared house just as the new students were settling in and still unpacking. The kitchen was a good size for the four inhabitants, with plenty of cupboard space for each person.

One cupboard had been loaded with a complete dinner service, and by complete, I mean something Downton Abbey would have been proud of – a full set of dinner plates, small side plates, two different types of bowls, cups and saucers as well as serving dishes: large, medium, small, with lids, plus even a gravy boat.

Ah ha, female student, I said to myself.

Don’t forget insurance

The next cupboard contained nothing except tins of baked beans - two layers of full trays of tins as if someone had gone into a supermarket and just lifted the whole trays off the shelves.

Ah ha, I said to myself. Male!

How wrong I was. But whether you bring baked beans or a dinner service, don’t forget your insurance. Student properties are often not particularly secure and I am sorry to have to tell you that a lot of theft goes on. From home contents to bike insurance, and even horse insurance, make sure you are covered, just in case.
